RePLAY Festival for families, November Edition

A festival aimed at all ages, focused on revitalising e-waste, circular economy and repairing, where everyone can play, learn and create! What is the value of old toys? Can we still use it by fixing it or making new toys with it? And if not, how do we part from it in a sustainable way? During the activity kids and their families repaired, disassembled, and revamped old toys (brought by them and donated by thrift shops), with the assistance of makers (from hackerspaces, FABlabs, etc.). Another part of the Festival was RePLAY Mini, where younger children (<8 years old) could get started with using tools and taking apart toys, honing their motor skills and learning about the various electronic parts, which could then be reused. Anything that was no longer useful was broken down for recycling.

Hack the stuff
Electrical and electronic products are often thrown away because they are not up to date. But is it possible to "hack" old products to make them modern? During this appointment we will see how to transform an old lamp into a "smart light" that can be controlled via app and Telegram.

Multimeter and cool tools
Is your fan no longer working? Before taking it to the collection points, we can try to find the fault and perhaps give it a new lease of life. But how to detect faults in electrical and electronic products? An indispensable tool is the tester, and we will learn how to make the best use of it during our repair work.

Talks on e-waste art work Scanner Orchestra and using e-waste.

Artist Marko Timlin gives an introduction to the Scanners Orchestra telling how to use e-waste in art work, where to get the parts and what kind of expertise is needed, Timlin talks about the concept of turning e-waste into artwork or recycling it. Timlin also gave the visitors an access to take part on "Floppy Disk Orchestra" to play music with it. After this visitors can participate in two workshops where they can make a flashing LED light using recycled materials or take a look inside old computers and use parts of them in other projects.

RePLAY Smart@Sea - Museon@thebeach (second event)

During Smart@Sea at the Living Lab in Scheveningen kids (and families) are motivated to make up a sustainable solution for a problem in their living area (e.g. garbage in the local park, fire hazards, etc.). Together with an illustrator they visualised their invention and then together with the Replay makers made a small-scale model/version from old toys and electronic parts. The kids (and their families) with the best, most innovative ideas were awarded a visit in the museum with a little ceremony.

E-WASTE is the fastest growing waste in the world. Every year in Italy we produce around one million tonnes of electronic waste, almost 16 kg per person, of which only 36% is properly recycled. With friends from other Italian FabLabs we will try to understand how the tools in the labs can be used to resurrect the technological products we love so much.

New methods to repair

Every year we Europeans produce an average of 16.2 kilograms of e-waste per person. Average that ranks us among the first places in the ranking of the largest producers of electronic waste. But let's not despair, in addition to institutional initiatives, initiatives have been born and continue to be born from below that encourage the culture of recycling and repair. On April 10 from 10 am to 12 am we invite promoters and repairers to meet virtually to investigate new ways to be traced and traveled to raise awareness on issues of circular economy and electronic waste.

Open source and repair. How goodwill can make us more sustainable

We live in a historical moment characterized by a massive presence and use of electronic products and this can also be seen in the numbers related to the production of waste. Every year in Italy we produce about one million tons of electronic waste, almost 16 kg each, of which only 36% is correctly recycled. With Paolo Aliverti, engineer and communicator we will try to understand how it is possible to make our life more sustainable, trying to preserve our planet as much as possible.

Waste or resources?

To extract between 2 and 4 grams of gold need to work a ton of soil. In a single ton of exhausted hardware you can find up to 16 gr. Just do two accounts to understand how much the recovery of gold from computers can be convenient both in economic terms and in terms of impact on the environment and society. Extracting gold from old components is not an easy job and you can't improvise. Instead, you can use old components to make new products. With Ale Torrisi by ATLAB we will discover how from old washing machine engines it is possible to make an electric go kart.
